'my father said the red pines sulk' is about the forest fires that turned into a collective trauma for Meltem Şahin’s hometown, Marmaris, in 2021. The video reveals frightening evidence of our inability to respond to the emergencies of climate crisis. It captures the despair of disappearing forest land and highlights the ray of hope in the unwavering solidarity of volunteers actively combating forest fires. This piece consists of videos collected by Meltem Şahin from the ‘Marmaris Fire Aid’ volunteer group. The blend of diary entries and poetry that Meltem Şahin performs in the video consists of what she witnessed and felt during the fires. Music is composed by Mert Kocadayı based on an earlier piece called ‘Ashes of Amos,’ dedicated to Forest Fires of 2021.
”my father said the red pines sulk” was part of the “When Trees Speak” exhibition at Cendere Sanat Müzesi, co-curated by Ebru Yetiskin, and it encourages empathy while reflecting on our collective journey toward solidarity and foresight. This installation titled "Bearing Witness," it incorporates "The Tree of Gezi Park," "Un-seeing Eye," and "my father says the red pines sulk," works I’ve created over the last decade. This exhibition took place in Istanbul, Türkiye in 2024.
